An Introduction to UM's Research Security Program - (Executive Conference Room)

  • The University of Miami (UM) encourages our faculty and investigators to engage in scientific exchange with scholars worldwide as a fundamental driver of innovation and technological progress while adhering to the highest principles of research integrity. While most international affiliations pose no security risk, U.S. Federal and Florida state governments have intensified focus on researTch conducted abroad and with foreign collaborators because instances have arisen at U.S. universities where researchers violated laws and policies designed to prevent lapses in research security. This session will describe UM’s research security activities, being enhanced in response to newly released government regulations and in accordance with the policies of the entities that fund UM’s research.

It includes a summary of the space survey progress and provides a detailed timeline for completing the negotiation process to ensure timely and accurate rate determinations.
Navigating Export Controls and Avoiding Foreign Influence in Research at UM - (Library) 
  • Presented by William Collins, Director, Export Control Compliance, OVPRS & Lory Hayes, Ph.D., Director, Disclosures and Scholarly Activities Management (DSAM), OVPRS
  • Principled international collaborations play a pivotal role in advancing science and technology. By fostering cross-border partnerships, UM’s researchers gain access to diverse expertise, resources, and perspectives, leading to groundbreaking discoveries and innovations. While our conflict of interest policy requires disclosure of foreign interests and relationships, abiding by UM’s export compliance program for shipping items to international collaborators involves much more than sending packages via your preferred logistics provider. To ensure that our community can comply with Federal/state regulations and UM policies, this presentation will highlight “Do’s and Don’ts” case studies and furnish step-by-step guides for properly disclosing foreign relationships and exporting items to foreign entities or persons, thereby mitigating the risk of export violations, the consequences of foreign influence at UM, and possible legal prosecution.
